De-Stress & Avoid ABA Burnout with a Relaxing Post-Work Routine

Posted 2 years ago      Author: Stephen Smith

Working in ABA therapy can be stressful, and experiencing burnout from time to time is completely understandable. Creating a post-work routine that allows you to relax, unwind and leave work at the office is one of the best ways to avoid job fatigue.

Post-work rituals will vary from person to person and can be as simple as taking a deep breath or a long bath. We recommend that you start by ensuring you’re setting boundaries that allow you to develop and maintain a healthy work-life balance. Start by tying up loose ends at work towards the end of each day. Cut down on after-hours worries by planning for the following day with next-day to-do sheets and by leaving your work at the clinic. Make these after-work hours count with social outings, leisure time and non-work-related hobbies. Adding an activity like art or crafting into your routine for a short 45 mins is proven to reduce stress and boost serotonin levels!

Next, try creating a soothing home environment. This can be achieved with simple steps like decluttering your space and making your bed before leaving for work. Decorating for the holidays (no matter how early it may seem) is also a great way to boost your mood and create a cheerful home environment.

Finally, try putting on a calming playlist or podcast while you go about your routine.  Listening to music is a proven way to relieve stress! The 3 Pie Squared podcast has an exclusive bonus episode, intended to help ABA practitioners relax and unwind, featuring a guided meditation based on the practices of Yoga Nidra.

Ultimately, your post-work routine should consist of the habits and practices that work for you. Your routine won’t be the same as anyone else’s and may vary from a few to many steps. No matter how you choose to destress and unwind after work, remember to enjoy it and relax!
